I bought a new Asus router early this past summer. I wanted, among other things, better Wi-Fi, a VPN (not set up yet), and an easy way to implement DDNS. That’s Dynamic DNS. If my internet service provider changes my home IP address—which does happen from time to time—this service will automatically change the name server in the Domain Name System so I can still connect to my home network remotely.

I researched the freebie DDNS services and chose Dynu.com. Looked good. I didn’t want to use one of their generic (and some downright weird) domain name offerings, so I bought another domain name. I set everything up on the Dynu site and then was ready to set up my router. It was only then that I saw that Asus offers a rather finite number of choices for DDNS services, and Dynu was not one of them. And it was only then that I realized Asus offers this service free for their routers. Really! Unbelievable. I had no idea. It was surprisingly simple to setup. It’s a shame I spent all that time doing the Dynu stuff!

So now I own another domain name, and I’m not sure what to do with it … but it’s a good name, and I’m glad I don’t have to waste it on DDNS now. ◼︎
